Website Personalization

Do Not Turn a Visitor Signal Into a Biography

Personalize around what a visitor did without pretending to know who they are. Use these copy examples to keep intent-based messages honest.

A visit to a pricing page tells you that a pricing page was visited. It does not prove that the person is a purchasing manager, has an approved budget or is unhappy with their current provider.

Personalization copy can cross that gap without anyone noticing. “Ready to replace your failing system?” sounds confident, but the page may have no evidence for the claim.

Name the evidence before writing the message

For each proposed variation, write the observed event and the inference separately. “Arrived through a manufacturing campaign” is an event. “Runs a factory” is an inference. Decide whether your message needs the inference at all.

Often, the useful version is an invitation rather than a declaration:

  • Instead of “Your team has outgrown its tools,” try “Comparing tools for a larger team?”
  • Instead of “We know you need lower costs,” try “See what is included before comparing costs.”
  • Instead of “Welcome back, decision-maker,” offer “Continue exploring service options.”

These are editorial examples, not tested performance claims. The right language depends on the offer and the evidence your implementation actually has permission to use.

Review the copy without the targeting label

Show each variation to a colleague without telling them the audience segment. Ask what the page appears to know about the reader. If their answer includes personal details you never collected, soften or remove the assertion.

Also read the default version. A visitor should still understand the offer when the targeting signal is missing, ambiguous or unavailable. Personalization should not make the ordinary page incomplete.

Document what the message does not claim

Keep a short note beside the variation: the observed signal, the intended help and the assumptions excluded. For example: “Offers service details after pricing interest; does not assume purchase authority or budget.” This makes later revisions easier to review.

1976 PE describes using visitor behavior and traffic context to vary site messaging. Before configuring a variation, decide how to respond to that context honestly. Relevant copy can be specific without pretending that a click reveals a person's life.
